Just found out I lost another acquaintance (and classmate) to the violence in Iraq. Mark Metherell. Truth be told, I never talked with him since college, but it's still a shock and makes you realize the war is real and ongoing. I haven't been this drawn back to reality since realizing that Todd Beamer of flight93 fame was also a classmate.
I knew Mark from the swim team. I related to him since we both started freshman year together, were both biology majors (I changed mine), both swam the same freestyle events in about the same times.
I think he swam for two years before going on to other things.
Like many others have commented I remember his goofy smile that was there at all times. I remember his goofy shaped body that worked well in the pool, but seemed so ambling out of it. The dude embodied the California surfer. Laid back in all ways.
More info here.
Incredible bio by one of his platoon leaders here

Good newspaper story.
Of the links above, the photos probably can best convey his character.
He is a loss to this world.

Edit: As I have continued to read the posts on the Mark Metherall website, I am truly blown away with his impact. I have such an incredibly hard time reconciling the easygoing, playful Mark I knew with the warrior he apparently was.
Take the time to read the site. Don't forget our military which I am truly guilty of.
Thank you Mark for sacrificing for me and my family.
