No, it wasn't the EBB although I suspected it.
It was...ta dah: bad left crank arm. Replaced by Truvative under warranty. No creak. Gone. That's nice.
Also got new eggbeaters under trade in (first time I have killed a pair).
Along with the prior fork issues, this is the most breakage action I've seen in a while.
Random thoughts.
